Rocky Point is just over 4 hours by car from either Phoenix or Tucson. It is a
free zone so no car permits or visas are needed. However, it is required by law
that foreigners have Mexican insurance on their cars. This can be purchased at
the AAA or in Ajo, Why, or Lukeville.
Mexican border guards conduct routine spot checks of vehicles. They are looking
for expensive items like TVs or merchandise to be sold in Mexico plus large
amounts of beer and alcohol. (Guns and/or ammunition are forbidden.)
You may want to get gas in either Ajo, Why, or Lukeville since gas is expensive
in Mexico.
On your return to the US, you will be stopped by US Customs and Immigration at
the border who will check the passengers for citizenship (no papers needed
unless you are not a US citizen) and to give the vehicle a security check.
From Phoenix: Take I-10 to the state route 85 exit (near Buckeye) and
head South to Lukeville (at the border). Continue on 85 through Gila Bend, Ajo
and Why (where State Route 86 intersects 85) on your way to Lukeville. You will
be driving through the beautifully scenic Organ Pipe National Monument.
From Tucson: Take state route 86 on the West side of Tucson to Why, AZ
and then go south to Lukeville through Organ Pipe National Monument on state
route 85.
Continuing from Lukeville: Cross through the border and head South
through Sonoyta. This is Mexican route 8, but is not marked. You will come to an
intersection with another highway which goes East and West. (This is route 2 to
Mexicali. Do not turn right.) Turn left at the stop sign and bear right after
the bridge and go through town past the Vasquez store on route 8. There are
signs pointing to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point). It is 60 miles of good highway.
You will be passing through the Pinacate Biopreserve.
In Rocky Point: Go through town to the municipal
building at the 5th traffic light. Turn left (East)
on the road to Caborca. There is a sign pointing to
Las Conchas where we are. Go about 1 mile to the second
Pemex gas station and turn right on the dirt road to
Las Conchas. Pass the high school on the right and go
through a guard gate for Las Conchas. Click
here to view a map of the Las Conchas area. Go 3
miles to the place where the road takes a sharp right
around 3 houses and then a gradual left. Our house is
Lot 1 in Section 5 and is the 6th house on the
right after an open space of 2 lots on the beach. We
have a sign on the wall that says: Familia Libby.
Welcome.
